N*E*R*D Perform New Song Called ‘Nothing’

“You can’t be me, I’m a rock star” sang uber-producer-cum-frontman Pharrell Williams on N*E*R*D’s 2002 single ‘Rock Star,’ and on Wednesday night, he did everything in his power to prove it. Playing a private show for York University students, Pharrell and the rest of N*E*R*D – short for No One Ever Really Dies – turned the sparse surroundings of a former air force hanger in Toronto’s Downsview Park into a warehouse rave, complete with booty-shaking dancers, swooning under-age ladies and a kick-ass soundtrack that managed to seamlessly blend punk, hip-hop, MOR soft-rock and jazz under the guidance of the ever personable Williams. The night kicked off with local live remixers Keys N Krates warming up the crowd with their reconstructed takes on songs by Dr. Dre and Justice. They were soon followed by former Thunderheist MC Isis, who played a rare gig with a full six-piece band. The room really began to sweat when Williams arrived onstage, sending the collegiate co-eds into a tizzy with opening number ‘Everyone Nose.’

Flanked by two dancers, the man responsible for some of the last decade’s biggest hits spoke to the crowd about the group’s refusal to pump out radio hits on the group’s upcoming fourth album, ‘Nothing.’ “We put our blood sweat and tears into this. We go against what radio wants us to do. We go against that s—!” the singer exclaimed. “We try to make music that gets you through the day.” True to form, the group managed to mix in the new, less ‘radio-friendly’ songs amongst a slew of crowd pleasers — which included hits ‘Maybe,’ ‘Lapdance,’ ‘Run To The Sun,’ ‘She Likes To Move‘ and the aforementioned ‘Rock Star.’ The first of which, the new album’s title track, sounded surprisingly reminiscent of ‘Waiting for the Sun‘-era Doors, complete with organ-heavy explosion chorus. The group soon followed with another laidback new track entitled ‘I See The Light‘ which saw the unlikely pairing of ’60s English balladry verse with an ’80s soft-rock chorus.

With the new songs out of the way, Williams‘ rock star tendencies returned. Spotting a group of excitable teens in the front row celebrating a birthday, the singer crooned a special happy birthday, replacing the lyric usually reserved for a name with the lyrics ‘fine white Canadian girl, I wish I could kiss you.’ Later in the evening Williams decided he wanted to up the ante and, upon spotting a well-endowed fan in the front, proceeded to ‘air motorboat’ — look it up, kids — the excitable woman before inviting a slew of young ladies onstage to alternately lapdance and grind with him. The evening came to a close in fitting manner, with the group covering LMFAO’s ‘Shots‘ — ironic considering no alcohol was allowed in the music part of venue — before leaving the stage to attend to the aforementioned ladies, thanks to Aaron.

N*E*R*D – Nothing (Album Cover & Release Date), Novemver 2nd

Now that right there really looks like we’re gonna finally get Nothing this year. According to Rap-Up, this is N*E*R*D’s Cover of Nothing. Right, you probably think where the heck are the other 2 mofos on the cover, well I you asking me, that really is a nice and Creative cover wearing a combat helmet with red, white, and blue feathers stuck in the side, Pharrell touts his profile, facing away from the camera and really reminds me of the “In Search Of…” era. Now back to the question where the other members are, If you look back at the first N*E*R*D Album… you’ll see a pic of Shae playin (Tekken 3 Japan Version ‘The Fast One”) on the Playstation with the Controller in his hands which was weird as heck, now we got this cover here which makes it really representive for the title of the album oh and we got a new Release Date, this time around its the November 2nd. *Listens To Whats Wrong With Me*

Alyssa Bernal x The Star Scoop Interview

The Star Scoop: A lot of people know you from YouTube! What was your thought process when you first decided to start posting?
Alyssa Bernal: I discovered how people were doing singing covers on YouTube and thought it was weird at first! But then, I saw all the good comments, and I wanted to see the feedback I would get. So I started doing the same thing. Over a period of time, I started gaining this small fan base so I kept doing it and they started requesting songs.

TSS: A lot of people have put up covers. Obviously Pharrell saw something really special in you. What do you think he saw in you?
AB: I wish we could just get inside his head and ask him! It’s hard to explain. The relationship I had with my fan base – I already had their support and the way I looked at the camera, I made it personal. It was one on one. [He] didn’t even discover I played guitar until a few videos later and I think that’s what really captured attention.

TSS: The first single that you have out is “Cali, Cali, Cali.” Tell us about the song.
AB: “Cali, Cali, Cali” is just about escaping…relaxing, kicking back. I’m from San Antonio and I’ve been in triple digit degree weather lately and Cali is just a great place to be right now.

Pharrell, Ludacris & More Tour U.S. To Motivate Kids About School

Education reform is coming to a town near you– via bus. The Get Schooled Foundation announced Friday it is launching a nationwide bus tour headlined by entertainers and personalities like Ludacris and Pharrell Williams intended to get students, teachers and parents excited about education. The Get Schooled National Challenge and Tour will host youth summits and bus events in cities across the U.S. including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, designed to engage young people in talks about education. A recent College Board report ranked the U.S. twelfth worldwide in the proportion of adults with postsecondary credentials – a dramatic decline since ranking first just a generation ago.

Viacom Inc., AT&T and Univision Communications, Inc. have teamed up with school districts and nonprofit organizations around the country in an effort to push the U.S. back up the ranks. Through this initiative, teachers and mentors are able to do just that: In a show of understanding, Ludacris said: “Education is the ultimate challenge. I know from experience that sometimes it is tough to get inspired, to take control, and to have the discipline to see your education through. I’m excited to join other artists and The Get Schooled Foundation to help capture the attention of students and reinforce the vital message that education is important and a necessary tool for life.”

N*E*R*D x EW Interview, Nothing Due October 19th Confirmed

Pharrell: “We’ve tried to make the lead-up to this new album be like an Easter egg hunt, telling you one thing, and then like two months later it’s another date. We’re really good at that. In two seconds, there could be another release date.” N*E*R*D lit up Times Square today like it was New Year’s Eve, performing a free concert of three party-starting tracks off their new album, Nothing, currently slated for release October 19th. Before the show, EW caught up with Pharrell Williams to talk about his upcoming album, plans for the future, and why he calls America’s youth the “microwave generation.”

EW: You and collaborator Shay Haley have been best friends since high school. How has your relationship evolved over the years?
PW: We’re best friends. Love is like shoelaces. It’s only gotten tighter. Times change, so does the dichotomy between two people, and we’ve had some obstacles. But for us, our friendship has always been number one, and our music number two. Our music wouldn’t be as good if we weren’t such close friends.

EW: What can we expect from your new album, Nothing?
PW: At first, the album was called Instant Gratification, and it was good, but not good enough. It was our answer to this generation, which we have nicknamed the “microwave generation”: The Microwavers. Even though the microwave is old technology, it actually happens to be the mentality of all the people on the planet right now. Especially the kids—they want it now and they want it hot. They don’t want it ten minutes from now. With Nothing, we feel like we’re reflecting society.

Pharrell Thinks Obama Is Cooler Than Jay-Z

Jay-Z might be one of the coolest cats on the planet, but longtime collaborator Pharrell thinks that presidential swagger has one-up on the hip-hop icon. In a new interview, the N*E*R*D frontman, who took a trip to the White House this past May, spoke on how running a country makes you king of the cool kids. “Yeah, he’s cool as shit. I don’t know who’s cooler, him or Jay,” the super-producer told Rollacoaster Magazine, later giving the edge to the Commander-in-Chief. “Yeah, they’re both cool. Obama might be a little bit cooler. Sorry Jay.” Skateboard P also extended the cool branch to Janelle Monáe, with whom he toured as openers this past summer for Erykah Badu. “I like Janelle Monáe,” he exclaimed. “She’s a genius. She’s incredible.”

N*E*R*D x GlobalGrind Interview

Because of his stature in the music industry and celebrity world, N*E*R*D will always be perceived as Pharrell’s group, but upon closer look, there really is no captain. N*E*R*D, like most good music groups, is a collective force, whose leaders only functions as such off the stage. On stage and on record, one gets the feeling Pharrell as a solo artist would struggle for credibility if it not for the help of his partners Chad Hugo and Shay Haley. So even though Pharrell is the loudest one in the bunch, it’s all for the sake of the group. After all, the soft spoken Shay and the even softer spoken Chad aren’t going to be the ones to get all the cult-like attention they’ve garnered throughout the years.

The Pharrell as spokesperson role was still in full effect when Shay and he sat down on the phone with GlobalGrind to discuss their oft-delayed next album, Nothing. Though it took place weeks before the album’s initial September release, Nothing has been pushed back again until sometime late in the Fall. But over the summer, the Nelly Furtado assisted first single, “Hot-N-Fun” was one of the season’s more underrated club hits and since the interview, the group has announced a joint tour with electro-pop-rock band The Gorillaz beginning October 6. GlobalGrind talked with N*E*R*D about their new album, the video for “Hot-N-Fun” and what they did about Nothing.

GlobalGrind: Not to start off non-music related, but what were you all wearing in the “Hot-N-Fun” video?
Pharrell: You know what? It’s a movement, believe it or not. You know, if you gotta go to war, then you wear military gear, know what I’m saying? So it’s just kinda matching the feeling of what we tryin’ to do, and right now we just feel like it’s a sign of the times. Everything’s changing right now around us, and we’re not sure that everyone’s picking it up. But you know, we just made a bunch of songs on the album, that kinda illustrate that, just kinda telling everyone like “Hey, everything’s changing, everything’s changing around you.” We just decided to have that conversation. It’s like a movie, the movies about like having it basically, speaking in metaphor, like having a conversation with women, and we were just talking about like the world, and how its changing, and where it’s headed. And in that conversation, when you hear that song, when you hear the texture of our lyrics, of the sound, this is what it matches, the clothes match the beat.

Pharrell Talks T. I. Album, N*E*R*D Tour

If Pharrell Williams produces it, it’s a hit and it looks like the King of the South is getting the special treatment. MTV News caught up with the star beat maker, who admitted that in addition to working on the N*E*R*D album Nothing, he’s also been in the lab with one of our troublesome MCs. “Definitely that new T. I., it’s a bunch of nice things coming man,” said Pharrell before acknowledging that he’s left production alone for quite awhile. “Don’t worry, I miss it and I think it misses me too.” Skateboard P also mentioned N*E*R*D’s impending tour. “We’re just warming up for this Gorillaz tour and getting ready for the album to drop,” he said.

“That’s a baby that’s like been taking two years to come out.” The tour with the Brit-based alternative group Gorillaz begins on October 6 in Boston and ends on November 3 in Vancouver, B.C. Meanwhile, N*E*R*D has been working tirelessly on their new album Nothing, adding new bits and crafting remixes like the recent Ciara twist on their single “Hot-N-Fun.” “We’ve been trying to polish up the finishing touches,” says N*E*R*D member Shay Hayley. “We love the body of work that we created so far but we wanted to add some extra bells and whistles just to give people more of an incentive to go out and get it.”

Despite the consistent delay surrounding the release of Nothing, N*E*R*D remains one of the few hip-hop groups that can boast such imaginative in-house producers. “We just like making creative music,” said Pharrell. “Stuff that inspires the kids to make them want to do great things in the world, know that they can be empowered and not just do the same fluff, excuse me, pop stuff that’s out there in the world. We want to continue to reinvigorate and inspire these kids musically.”

Sara Bareilles Talks More About Pharrell

Grammy-nominated singer/pianist Sara Bareilles has been interviewed lately by Soundspike.com to talk about her No. 1 Album Kaleidoscope Heart and The Neptunes Session she had. “We had a couple of days in the studio, which was highly entertaining for me. I’m like, ‘I don’t even know what I’m doing here.’ He’s amazing. He’s super charismatic and really fun. We didn’t end up with anything, nothing we can play for anybody at the end of the day. But it was a riot for me to even be there. I was like, ‘What am I doing here?’ He’s got the kind of confidence that I’ll never have. I’m fascinated by it. He’s a cool dude.”
