Gloria Estefan Talks More About Pharrell

Conga, merengue, salsa, cumbia. And also pop. Rock. Folk.As a singer, Gloria Estefan has offered a whole palette of flavors and colors to her fans, both in English and in Spanish. But with her new English album, “Miss Little Havana,” the Cuban star reveals a side she had yet not explored with the tone of her voice — one of great sensuality.

She attributes her newest producer Pharrell, who has created hits for the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and more, with helping bring out her sexier side on the Latin dance album. “I am indeed, much more comfortable in my own skin,” said Estefan, 54, in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

“I think women, as we get older, we can just let go of a lot of things,” added the artist, who gained fame in the 1980s as the lead singer of the Miami Sound Machine. “I just have felt better and better through the years.” The first nine songs in “Miss Little Havana,” written or co-written by Pharrell and sprinkled with Spanish, tell the story of a young girl who arrives in Miami from Cuba in search of a new life, and finds her heart broken after she hooks up with the wrong guy. Not her story, says Estefan, whose first and only boyfriend has been her husband, Emilio, the ex-leader of the Sound Machine and producer. He produced four songs on the album, which comes out on Tuesday, exclusively at Target. It is her first in English since 2003‘s “Unwrapped.”

AP: What took you so long?
Estefan: Well, I was doing Spanish in between. We did “90 Millas” … But I never go into the studio just to do a record. I have to have some kind of creative idea that I feel that my fans will enjoy and that I wanna share, and Pharrell called me and said, “Listen, I would love to do a project with you and I have written a couple of songs for you that I’d like you to hear.” (And) when I listened I thought, “You know what? This is a great idea. I would love to be a part of this somehow and see how we click,” … and we did.

Yelawolf To Release N*E*R*D Collaboration On Debut Album

Rob Dyrdek, Pharrell Williams, Game & Yelawolf

Remember back in April 2010 when Yelawolf talked about going in the studio with The Neptunes and that he may go on Tour with N*E*R*D that summer, well Yelawolf actually was planned to be featured on N*E*R*D’s scrapped Instant Gratification album but it looks like we might get to hear that collaboration they did back then. Fast-rising rapper Yelawolf has announced that he will release his upcoming full-length studio album, Radioactive, on October 25th, 2011, via Ghet-O-Vision/Shady Records/DGC/Interscope. Radioactive is the Alabama-born rapper’s first album after the partnering of Ghet-O-Vision Entertainment and the Eminem-led Shady Records.

The album, which finds Yelawolf working with such producers as SupaHotBeats, Justice League, The Audibles, Diplo, Eminem, Lil Jon and Gangsta Boo with production from Andre 3000, Chuck Inglish and TheNeptunes’ N*E*R*D on the track ‘Write Your Name’, follows Yelawolf’s critically acclaimed Trunk Muzik 0-60 (Ghet-O-Vision/DGC/Interscope) — a 2010 compilation of tracks from his Trunk Muzik Mixtape along with previously unavailable recordings. “We are very eager for the world to hear Radioactive and proud to be presenting the album on Shady Records,” said Eminem. Yelawolf is a true original and he has crafted an incredible record.”

Yuna Talks About Pharrell, They Did Five Tracks

Back from the US for a special series of DFP shows, Yuna proved that her music has matured considerably on the big stage. While most artistes have hard knock stories about how they clawed their way into the spotlight, a few find themselves propelled to fame through a little luck, more than a few good fans and a lot of talent. Yunalis Zarai, better known as Yuna, is one of the lucky Myspace singer-songwriters who has grown beyond her beginnings, both in terms of fans and her music style. Back from the United States, where she was recording the beginnings of a sophomore album, she now works on her new album. In the video of Come As You Are, released a few months earlier, Pharrell Williams made a cameo appearance.

Not just a cameo for cameo’s sake, Williams has also been hired as a producer in Yuna’s next album. The US superstar has had a hand in producing five of Yuna’s new songs in Miami. “For me, he’s like a cool teacher. He actually produced the whole song and I’m the lyricist, it’s like co-writing songs. Although he produced it, he was still open to my ideas for the direction of the song,” she said. She said she was still experimenting with her music and would be open to trying new sounds, especially since signing on to the Fader label, which is better known for its hip hop and electronica artistes. “However, I’m absolutely not going to drop my acoustic guitar,” she assured.

Pharrell Talks About The State Of Music, Praises Rick Ross

Pharrell knows talent. For years, he’s been ahead of the curve in music, art and fashion. He helped usher in a new wave of artists like the Clipse and Kelis and continues to influence hip-hop style with his Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream clothing lines. As a part of the producing duo, The Neptunes, Pharrell racked up a stable of plaques and hits records over the past decade.

The group’s innovative and trending-setting sounds catapulted them into the spotlight and earned the team work with the likes of Jay-Z, Britney Spears and Snoop Dogg. However, Skateboard P says the sound of music as we know it is undergoing some drastic transformations. “If you notice every five years music changes and every ten years the decade previous is completely unrecognizable,” P says on the state of music. “Everything is cyclical.” Pharrell names Rick Ross as one of hip-hop’s current MVPs. “The way Ross is killing it right now.

It’s been a minute since the last time we had somebody like him to come out and do what he’s doing or like a Wayne,” Pharrell tells VIBE. “It’s just completely authentic. [Ross] knows what he wants to do —knows his sound, has a style, has a definitive position, has a perspective on the game and what he adds to it and how he’s gonna change it,” he continues. “So music is in a really, really good place now and I’m watching it. I’m in the studio and everything is changing.”

Pharrell Williams Talks Fashion

As New York Fashion Week 2011 came to a close, Hauteliving.com had the special opportunity to chat with one of the fashion industry’s most iconic individuals, Pharrell Williams. Although he is probably best known for his work in the music industry, Pharrell has crossed over to other creative areas including fashion, contemporary art, and interior design.

The sky is the limit for Pharrell, as he has achieved success with virtually every one of his endeavors. When the all-around-artist decided to break into interior design, he stopped at nothing and created a collection of exceptional chairs by joining forces with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris.

His unparalleled eye and flare for all things creative have cemented his credibility and value in the world of art. Pharrell’s pivotal contribution to fashion includes the sensation of his clothing brands Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, as well as his sunglass and jewelry collection for Louis Vuitton, entitled Blason. In 2005, Esquire magazine named Mr. Williams the best-dressed man in the world. Over the course of our conversation, he shared his thoughts and experiences during New York Fashion Week, as well as insight into the designers and brands he most admires. What a way to close out a week filled with foreword thinking and creativity!

RA: New York Fashion Week is one of the best times to be in the city, what do you most look forward to during this time of year?
PW: The production of the shows and seeing what the inspirations were for the designers and how they wanted to express themselves.

RA: What shows do you most look forward to attending?
PW: Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs.

Gloria Estefan Talks New CD

“I don’t like to just go into the studio to just go into the studio. I really want to have a musical idea, some creative spark that makes me excited about doing what I’m doing. Pharrell called me – he had written a song for me called “Miss Little Havana” – and he wanted to delve into that Hispanic world and even go further than he already has. It was really a very interesting idea. We clicked so well in the studio that I think this album is a real example of how much we clicked – creatively and on many levels.

After we had done the nine tracks with Pharrell, we took it to the club in the last four tracks with different remixers and producers that are on the cutting edge of the clubland side. I wanted to give fans not just the nine concept-y tracks that we did with Pharrell - although they didn’t start that way, there was a storyline I discovered after we finished the songs – and really take it to hardcore dance.”

Gloria Estefan & Pharrell Williams Make Magic On Miss Little Havana

Twenty five years since “Conga” made Gloria Estefan an international sensation, the consummate performer is back with a conceptual album showcasing her talent like never before. Miss Little Havana incredibly marks Estefan’s 26th album. And with every pulsating beat, you get the feeling the 54-year-old has more energy and fervor for life than most women half her age.

It was conceived by executive producer Pharrell Williams, who came to her with the title track out of a curiosity to explore the Latin music market. “[The concept] really piqued my interest; I thought maybe this marriage can bring me an interesting baby,” she says laughing. The album’s concept is the story of a 17-year-old girl who comes to the big city looking for freedom and romance, only to find heartache and betrayal.

The marriage, as Estefan describes it, is the blending of her dancefloor-ready Latin sound with Pharrell’s smooth urban sensibilities. Both risks pay off; Miss Little Havana is an explosion of beats that sees Gloria returning to her roots, an album reminiscent of hit records like Let It Loose and Primitive Love. “I have a feeling this record is going to remind my fans of where we started and how we’ve grown. My fans have given me the opportunity to evolve; I’ve really been able to express myself as an artist in every way that I am,” she says. “And dance music unites as human beings. Songs like ‘Conga,’ ‘Rhythm Is Gonna Get You’; if I perform them in Japan, Europe, anywhere, it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the lyrics, you feel the drums. Dancing is one of the things that unites us, regardless of age, background or social standing.” In addition to the lead single “Wepa” (with Pitbull on the remix) a highlight is “Right Away,” a perfect melding of both Gloria and Pharrell’s strengths.

“This song goes from very sweet to very nasty,” Gloria says with a laugh. The sweeping, feel-good track is described as a “disco tune that goes into a hard conga sound.” Other standouts on the album include “Hotel Nacional,” a fun, jitterbug-influenced song (reminiscent of worldwide hit “We No Speak Americano” by Yolanda Be Cool), “On” featuring Gloria’s daughter Emily Marie on an electric guitar solo (and Gloria singing in Creole) and the heartfelt ballad “Time Is Ticking Away.” Passionate in every facet of her life, Estefan is vocal about how her infamous car accident in 1990 (while promoting her best-selling album, Cuts Both Ways)—which left her with a fractured spine and two titanium rods to stabilize her vertebral column—is a driving force in her attitude toward her health. “I’m titanium reinforced and if I don’t work out, I feel it,” she says. “If anybody jumped in my body they might feel my pain, but I ignore it. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.”

Through her work with the Lois Pope LIFE Center, the world’s largest and most comprehensive spinal cord injury research facility, the entrepreneur and philanthropist has revealed she and her team are close to finding the cure for paralysis (so far she’s helped raise $40 million toward the project). Together with husband Emilio she owns seven restaurants, two hotels and is a minority stake owner in the Miami Dolphins NFL franchise. After a lifetime of achievement, what is Gloria’s ultimate dream? “I’ve sung for every audience in every nation but my own,” she says as she reminisces over her parents’ journey from Cuba to the United States when she was just 18 months old, where her grandmother snuck mango baby food and Cuban records in with their luggage and authorities ripped apart her mother’s academic certifications upon leaving the country. “I want to one day sing for a free Cuba.” Miss Little Havana, sold as a deluxe edition through Target stores and a standard edition from iTunes, is available from September 27.
