chester-f.jpgChester French, a new Harvard-educated, quirky pop band discovered by Kanye West and eventually signed to The Neptunes’ Star Trak imprint label, were next, and anticipation was running high for these guys. “Everyone says they’re the next big thing. Well, I heard them first!” Perez declared. Incredibly, this was only the baby-faced baby band’s second show EVER, but they worked the scenester crowd like old pros, tossing daisies and condom-shaped promotional CDs to the audience while their label boss/mentor Pharrell stood sidestage, beaming like a proud parent.”

The Harvard duo have been anointed with some of the Pharrell Williams magic pixie dust, and their debut for The Neptunes co-founder’s label, Star Trak, is due out soon. The show: Playing to a sparse crowd at the hard-to-find Volume (I passed it three times without seeing the sign), they buttered up the crowd by passing out irises and roses to the ladies up front and tucking the rest behind their ears, in their guitars. Despite claims from my co-worker, James Montgomery, they did not sound like a doo-wop group. In fact, their signature tune, “The Jimmy Choo’s” sounded less barbershop quartet and more “Buddy Holly”-era Weezer, down to guitarist Maxwell Drummey’s cardigan sweater vest, corduroys and untucked oxford shirt.
