As the Academy gears up to unveil its shortlists on Dec. 17, one notable change stands out: the Best Original Score category will expand from 15 to 20 entries, while Best Original Song remains capped at 15. Voting for nominations runs from Jan. 8-12, with final nominees revealed on Jan. 17. The 2025 Oscars take place on March 2, and there’s already plenty to celebrate. As awards season heats up, could this be another milestone moment for Pharrell? We’ll have to wait and see, but the buzz is real. Here are two songs that could potentially be nominated for the Oscars.
“For Real” and “Piece by Piece,” both taken from Piece by Piece, the animated film co-directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, boldly and creatively explore Pharrell Williams’ life and career through Lego animation. Beyond Pharrell’s starring role, the film features an all-star voice cast, including Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg.
Pharrell’s track record with the Oscars is impressive. He earned a nomination for Best Original Song with “Happy” from Despicable Me 2, a global hit that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks and lit up the 2014 Oscars stage. In 2017, he was also recognized as a producer for Hidden Figures, a Best Picture nominee. With 39 Grammy Nominations under his belt — including Song Of The Year for co-writing Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” — Pharrell has proven himself a master at creating music that resonates emotionally and culturally.
