Robin Thicke was not playing games when he said he had a thing or two to teach the masses about Sex Therapy on his last album. The R&B singer was in attendance at the American Music Awards last night to present the award for Best Female R&B Vocalist with singer Ellie Goulding, but the fact that he wasn’t nominated for an award didn’t stop the new dad from giving explicitly candid interviews! Thicke spoke about everything from fatherhood to music and even let us in on his skilled sex game that keeps wifey Paula Patton Shaking It For Daddy. Fellas, take note. Thicke has one of the baddest actresses in the game wearing his ring, so you may want to pay some close attention to how he makes that relationship work.
Robin, what is coming up next for you?
My new album comes out December 6th, which is why I am here shamelessly promoting it. It is called Love After War and it is about the inner demons that we all fight, that we all have. It is also about my lady and just having a baby! We have a one and a half year old child. Once you see what a woman has to go through to have a baby, you really learn what real compassion, understanding and patience is all about and what it is to go through that.
Aside from Lil’ Wayne, who else are you collaborating with on this album?
With this new album I feel like I had so much to talk about and so much to say. I wrote and produced it myself and the only collaboration I have is Lil Wayne. It was supposed to be a remix, but obviously he is so talented that it is just that much better than the original, so I kept him on the album.
Now that you are a new dad and you’ve got a new album coming out, how do you manage your time?
Lots of sex. Lots of sex is the only way to keep everything on par. My wife is an actress and a mother and a wife and I am a husband and a father and a singer, so we haven’t seen each other a lot these last couple of weeks. We won’t see each other until Christmas. It is very difficult, but I think the only thing that gets us by is that we have great sex together.
You said your wife is an actress, but are we going to see you in any movies any time soon?
I sure hope not! I would embarrass the whole family. I think I am just meant to write songs and sing them and she is the one who is meant to look beautiful and get naked on TV.
How do you feel about your wife’s acting career? She has had a lot of success lately.
I couldn’t be happier, let me tell you. When your beautiful wife comes home and she has the body of an angel, you’re very grateful. I couldn’t be happier with my life, except for maybe a lot more money.
You’re having lots of sex. Are you planning on a new baby?
Not lots of sex, there is never enough. I just mean when it does happen it goes on for hours, baby! There is always a lot of making up to do.
While you’re doing that are you trying to work on a new baby or are you just putting in the practice?
No, I think anybody who has two babies, God bless you, but it is not something we are planning on doing.
You and Paula have been together since you guys were teenagers, so beyond sex, can you give us any insight on how you guys are making it work?
I think you have to show forgiveness as soon as possible. Everybody loses their temper, everybody loses their cool and I think that if you can forgive and start the healing process as soon as possible, then you have the most success.
Have you changed at all since having a baby? And what do you think is the best thing about being a dad?
The best thing about being a dad is that somebody loves you unconditionally. The time I spend with my child is the best time; it is never enough. Today as I was getting ready for the awards he just wanted daddy to hold him. All those times are the greatest times of my life. I just wish I could spend more time with my family and be equally successful, or still spend time trying to be as equally successful.
Do you have any favorite songs that you sing to your son?
Yes, “Akuna Matada,” and “In The Jungle the mighty jungle…” he loves that.
What are your holiday plans this year?
Luckily we get to get together for a few days and then she goes on a three week fabuloso tour for Mission Impossible 4 and I go on, a mediocre fabuloso tour. We won’t be able to see each other for about three weeks, so we are really anxious about that and dying to get back to each other once the holidays are back.
You talked about the love part of the album, what about the war part?
The first four or five songs are all about war. There are a lot of wars going on. There is the literal war that our country is going through and then there is the war that we are all going through with ourselves to believe in ourselves to get over our fears internally. Then there is the war that we go through in our relationship when you love somebody and you are trying to negotiate who you are as a human being and still appreciate them for all they are worth. I thought I was a man before I had a baby and now I realize I have finally become a real man because it takes a lot of patience and compassion to be a good husband and a good father. I think I just nailed that! I think I did pretty good!
There are a lot of great artists here at the AMAs, are there any of them that you would like to work with in the future?
I haven’t gotten to meet Bruno Mars yet and I really respect him and I told him instead of making a song together we should have a hair fight. I think the two of us should just get on TV and let our hair fight each other. I think I might win, got to be honest.
