Pharrell Williams & Robin Thicke Will Appeal ’Blurred Lines’ Copyright Ruling

Pharrell Robin Thicke dJury ruled that the 2013 hit was too much like Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up.” The copyright dispute between “Blurred Lines” song creators Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke, and the family of Marvin Gaye, will continue on to a higher court. Earlier this year, Gaye’s family said in court that Williams and Thicke stole critical elements from Gaye’s 1977 song “Got To Give It Up” for their 2013 hit “Blurred Lines.”

A jury agreed with Gaye’s family and awarded them $7.4 million, which was later reduced to $5.3 million. Now, Williams and Thicke are looking to appeal (PDF) that decision in the 9th Circuit Court Of Appeals. The case was unusual because in a pre-trial hearing, the judge ruled that the applicable 1909 copyright law only covered sheet music, not the song’s actual sound. The judge later reversed his decision, ordering Williams and Thicke’s lawyers to produce an audio recording of “Got To Give It Up” that only included a bass line and keyboard chords underneath some vocals from Gaye.

Harry Winston Names Robin Thicke As Brand Ambassador

At the unveiling last week of the Opus 14 in the great spa town of Baden Baden, Germany, Harry Winston transformed the entrance of the Kurhaus conference complex into a huge jukebox in an effort to underscore the concept of the 1950’s jukebox that is the inspiration for the Opus 14 watch (it has changing disks that are moved by an arm and spin in to place to reveal their information – much like the record playing jukeboxes of yesteryear).

At that event, the brand’s CEO, Nayla Hayek, also announced Harry Winston’s first-ever brand ambassador, American singer and songwriter, Robin Thicke. Hayek explained that she had met Thicke during the Cannes Film Festival and felt he would be an excellent match for the brand. After all, he is chic, sophisticated, professional and incredibly talented.

Thicke also pushes himself to new limits all the time in his work. In fact, during an exhilarating performance on stage at the Kurhaus “diner,” Thicke sang, played piano, climbed on top of the Grand Piano for dramatic appeal and even walked among the audience while singing. In short, Thicke put on a vibrant show worthy of the Harry Winston name.
