An Update To Solange’s Third Studio Album

September 13, 2011

Having worked with a slew of influential artists like Pharrell and Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor on previous recordings, Solange is committing to a collaborative atmosphere and has shared details on who she’ll work with on her fourth album, which is due for a 2014 release. Think Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth, Patrick Wimberly from Chairlift, members of SBTRKT and Drake collaborator Sampha.

There’s no word yet on who will produce the album (though she’s worked with a fair share of big-name producers in the past—Mark Ronson, Cee-Lo Green and Jermaine Dupri) but we do know that the album is being recorded between New York and New Orleans and will be released through her own record label, Saints Records.

In more eyebrow-raising Solange news, rumor has it that the singer is in talks to play late R&B artist Aaliyah in an upcoming biopic. Jet Magazine reported on the rumor earlier this week, sending her fans into a flurry of speculations on whether Solange is “really that somebody” to play the beloved singer, who died in a plane crash in 2001. Solange voiced Penny Proud in Disney’s The Proud Family and has played small roles in shows like Johnson Family Vacation and Lincoln Heights.

Leah LaBelle – I Decided (Solange Cover)

Check out this amazing cover of Leah LaBelle covering Solange’s ‘I Decided’ produced by The Neptunes back in 2009. It’s amazing that she didn’t change a bit since 2009, still beautiful as three years ago!

Solange Working On New LP With Pharrell

The singer will return with third LP. Solange Knowles and Pharrell Williams have been pictured in the studio together working on the singer’s third LP. The new LP is said to have a dance new wave-inspired sound, and the two are seen vibing and chilling out. Williams is seen playing the keys and laying on a couch with Knowles. The pair have collaborated several times in the past on Solange’s 2003 debut Solo Star and most notably on ‘I Decided’ off her 2008 release Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. The 25-year-old sister of superstar Beyoncé tweeted: “So excited my album is shaping up so well! My sessions here with Pharrell have been amazing.”

Sol-Angel & The Hadley St. Dreams (Boston Review)

When she made her tepid debut five years ago, Solange Knowles clearly wasn’t ready for the big leagues. But Beyonce’s sister sure is now. This is such a smartly executed, classy set of songs that’s miles away from the hoochie pop being turned out by young female R&B vocalists these days. Solange is confident and in command throughout, and she sings with commitment and sass on “Valentine’s Day” and the Mark Ronson-produced “Six O’clock Blues.” The set has an organic throwback vibe that evokes classic Motown and ’70s soul while remaining firmly contemporary.

She summons up The Supremes, among others, on the swinging “T.O.N.Y.” and on the killer “I Decided” (with none of the Neptunes’ typical production tics). In fact, the production is sweetly clean and brisk. The songs are about love and finding a sense of self, which makes sense for a sibling of one of the biz’s biggest stars. As long as she keeps things flowing and upbeat, things hum and only the two gauzy ballads (including a duet with the undervalued Bilal on “Cosmic Journey”) miss the mark. There’s no way after this that Solange won’t be taken on her own terms because this sister can sing.
