N*E*R*D – Help Me (Live In London)

N*E*R*D performed two days ago live at Kentish Town HMV Forum, London UK where they revealed a new tune off the upcoming album ‘Nothing’ called ‘Help Me’. If you asking me, that shyt right there sounds pretty fantastic, it has that Woodstock rock thing feeling to it ‘No I W’ont Shoot You But I’ll Watch You Die’, check it out, thanks to YaheardFilm. Fourth Album A ‘New Era’ For N*E*R*D. N*E*R*D say their upcoming fourth album, Nothing, represents a “new era” for the hip hop/rock band. “We’re like starting all over,” says Pharrell Williams. “We were paid a lot of great accolades and sometimes undeserved respect (on their previous records). “Sometimes you almost want to refuse some of it because people were so kind.

But now we want to continue turning the pages.” The trio, which also includes Chad Hugo and Shae Halley, have also released Hot-N-Fun, the first single from the new album. The track features guest vocals from Nelly Furtado, but Pharrell and Chad are staying quiet about other potential contributors, only teasingly referring to “a few other treats”. However, Chad did give BBC Radio 1Xtra a heads up on his stand-out tracks from Nothing: “I think you should look out for Help Me, For Sure, I’ve Seen the Light and Victory,” he said.

The new single also features the line ‘People don’t want to think anymore, they just want to feel.’ Pharrell says this sentiment is the motivation for the album as a whole: “This new N*E*R*D is fitting of the times. “Everything from the oil spill to the iPad – technological failure and technological advancement all in the same era. “There’s a lot going on. And we can’t forget about a lot of our brothers and sisters over there fighting a war. “I think people are tired of thinking – they just want to feel. They want to get back to a moment, so we started this album.” Thirty-seven-year-old Pharrell is certainly all about the music. Despite a recent cameo alongside Diddy in the Russell Brand comedy Get Him To The Greek he says he’s got no plans to turn to acting. “I haven’t seen it either,” he admits. “I didn’t go the premiere.”

Pharrell on Michael Jackson ‘’I pay my respects every time I mention his name… When that man was on stage what he did was amazing’’ One thing Pharrell is a whole lot more enthusiastic about is paying respects to Michael Jackson, an artist that he idolised and imitated as a boy It’s the anniversary of the King of Pop’s death on 25 June and the star is gushing with his praise: “I pay my respects every time I mention his name”, he says. He is one of the greatest artists of all time… I would just say when that man was on stage what he did was amazing and I’m not sure the world will ever see that kind of amazing talent on a stage again. That guy was different.” Nothing by N*E*R*D is due out in September 7th.

N.E.R.D. recorded several tracks for their new album — in fact, they recorded the entire album twice and still weren’t happy and, in the end, found themselves with nothing. “We had several [album] names throughout this process,” Shay Haley explained. “It’s just one day [Pharrell] called and said, ‘What do you think about the album title Nothing?’“ Shay said the group started with a blank slate and ultimately filled it in with songs inspired by two things: touring and women. The group has toured extensively since before the release of their third album Seeing Sounds in 2008. They’ve played several festivals, colleges and opened for both Kanye West and Jay-Z. And Pharrell said the touring influenced the type of music they made.

“It’s funny — I think we were blessed in that sense,” Pharrell explained. “The music is very psychedelic for the most part — 80 percent of it is definitely flower-power, counterculture, release and let yourself be free and have a great time!” Pharrell also said they wanted to tap into a new understanding of the opposite sex and cater the album more towards women. The first single is “Hot N’ Fun” and features Nelly Furtado, who the gang recruited for her distinctive tone. “We think that the new definition of sexuality is the appreciation of life and the moment, and that’s why people should have sex. For the most part, when you and her are there and you’re having a special moment, it’s like, ‘Aww man, I could have been anywhere in the world, but I’m here with you! This is amazing to me! This is so cool — let’s do it,” Pharrell laughed. “I’m so kidding, by the way.” “It’s the ultimate spring, summertime record. It’s the festival record, it’s a fun record and it’s geared towards the women,” Shay offered. “What woman doesn’t want to put on their sundress and stroll through SoHo and have that as their theme music?”

N.E.R.D - Fuse TV

Avant-funk cosmonauts N.E.R.D. debuted snippets of their upcoming fourth album Nothing in a dark Chelsea, New York lounge last night. According to the ever-visible Pharrell Williams, the album was influenced by the ’60s and ’70s counterculture — the psychedelic soundtracks that accompanied the anti-war, anti-sexism and anti-segregation movements. The snippets indeed felt like swirling acid rock subverted through the impossibly funky N.E.R.D. machine: parts were redolent of the hauntingly minimal bubbling of Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s a Riot Going On or the snaky, minor-key spirals of Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow. Opener “Help Me” even sounds like a hip-hop reimagining of Waiting for the Sun-era Doors, complete with shimmering Manzarek-sounding organs and what sounds like Pharrell doing his best Jim Morrison “come on!”

N.E.R.D. completed the illusion by bringing four go-go girls to shimmy along during the party. “We just wanted to explore something different, something visual,” N.E.R.D.’s Chad Hugo told Rolling Stone. “Peaceful, sexual, other stuff synonymous with the era.” Hugo says the band listened to The Doors and The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds for inspiration — although mostly on MP3 instead of vinyl — and studied a handful of James Bond films for their slinky vibes. So did they experiment with psychedelic drugs to get the desired effect? “We were doing exercises… push-ups,” says Hugo. “And then we’d take breaks and go outside our Miami studio and play guitar on the porch.” About the title, Nothing, Williams told the crowd, “We spent all of last year touring, it was good. But good was not good enough, so we started with nothing.” The album is due June 15th, thanks to haybusa.

Shae1

Shae has been interviewed by The Pistola Com right after N.E.R.D.’s Liacouras Center performance where Shae revealed that the new album is due June 15th. He also revealed that they tried some punk pop sounds for the new album with some outside producers but they haven’t decided yet what will make the album and according to Posterous Com, N.E.R.D.’s new single ‘Hot & Fun’ is due April 20th. Check out the whole Interview below.

The Pistola: So where are you right now?

Shay Haley: In LA. Finishing up the album.

TP: Nice. How’s that going? How’s the west coast?

SH: The weather is beautiful and the album is pretty insane. It’s just great, everything’s perfect.

TP: How long have you guys been working on the record?

SH: We’ve been working on this album for, I would say, about a year and half now. We tried out some punk pop sounds. We went in a punk pop direction. We explored adding members to the band, just trying to walk down every avenue to find a new direction and different sounds.

TP: How’d adding new members and such go?

SH: It was fun. It was a learning process. Musically, we explored a lot of new musical directions. We tried a lot of things that necessarily didn’t fit the band, but… (his phone loses service. I get a call back a minute later). My fault Colin, my phone service went out. So we added a member to the band; we toured with him for a good six months and for whatever reason it didn’t work out. Now we went back to the original setting, which is Chad(Hugo), Pharrell(Williams) and myself. We all did our research and found dope directions that we can all get together to continue the N.E.R.D move.

TP: You three go way back. How long have you known eachother for?

SH: It’s been over 15 years.

TP: Are they (Hugo and Pharrell) kind of like having brothers in a sense? Do you guys ever fight over something?

SH: Yeah, we definitely bump heads sometimes. It’s healthy for the relationship. When you’re dealing with three different strong personalities, a lot of times we’re pretty much on the same wavelength in terms of creativity is concerned. Then there’s times where somebody will just come out with an idea that just doesn’t make sense for the movement. We have healthy debates and figure out a better plan that makes sense for the group. We’re trying that extreme idea and see how it works.

TP: Do you guys write together or do you individually bring ideas to the table?

SH: It varies. Chad might come with an idea or P or myself. You know, it all varies, but we all work collectively together. P and Chad are definitely the maestros musically behind it but I’m forever going through the crates and the archives, always searching for new sounds and directions that we can go in. So we can be ahead of the curve. N.E.R.D doesn’t necessarily have to fit with what’s going on; we like to push the envelope and do new things.

TP: So at your upcoming shows, are you going to play any new material or stick to your old stuff?

SH: I think it’s time for the N.E.R.D fans and the other who are coming to see N.E.R.D who aren’t necessarily familiar with the N.E.R.D sound or the previous albums. They’ll get a taste of what this new album is going to be about. It’s pretty great. We’re known for making intense music. So we’re going to continue that.

TP: Are Pharrell and Hugo taking on producer roles again for the new record?

SH: Yeah, Chad and Pharrell primarily produced this whole record. We worked with some outside producers. Those particular songs, we haven’t decided yet who make the album. That’s still up for discussion. We haven’t put together the sequence of the album just yet Until we mix and master and press, it’s still yet to be determined what’s going to make album and what’s not.

TP: When do you think it’s going to drop?

SH: Right now, it’s tentatively dropping on June 15th.

TP: Very cool. That’s not too far away.

SH: Nope, that’s right around the corner.

TP: After the album drops, are you guys going to hit the road for a while?

SH: Absolutely, of course, we’re on the road now. We’ve been doing college shows on the weekends and sporadically throughout the week. We’re gonna go hard though in June. Start hitting the festivals and getting our promo tour on for the album release. You know, all that good shit. All those beautiful things with the promoting process.

TP: So I got a few short questions for you. Just say whatever comes to your mind first… Imagine you had to curate your own festival, what three artists or bands would you have play?

SH: Grizzly Bear, Audio Bullys and Kanye(West).

TP: Grizzly Bear? The guys who live in Brooklyn?

SH:Yeah. To be honest, I’m not sure where they’re from. I was introduced to them by Youtube, I’m a Youtube fanatic when it comes to finding dope indie bands who haven’t necessarily got the proper attention that they deserve.

TP: Yeah, they put out a pretty sweet record(Veckatimest) last year.

SH: Yeah, I haven’t done my homework yet but they make some insane music.

TP: So have you had any crazy fan encounters?

SH: No, not really. I try to lay pretty low key.

TP: I guess it’s probably better that way…

SH: Well, to each his own. Some people get in it for the attention and love then there’s those who just get in it for the love(laughs).

TP: When’s the last time you performed?

SH: We performed last Saturday at Duke University right before the national championship game.

TP: That was probably pretty crazy.

SH: Oh, yeah that was pretty fucking insane.

TP: What’s the last new artist or band that just blew you away when you listened to them?

SH: This band I discovered called Mansions On The Moon. You gotta check them out, they’re pretty dope.

Mansions On The Moon With N.E.R.D.

TP: You’ve been in the music business for quite a while. If you had to name one thing, what’s the coolest thing that music has brought you?

SH: I guess just being in a position to take care of my family and a lot of my friends.

NERDilicious

One of my good friends from the forum Plaxxx has been at the NERD concert in San Francisco , CA at Yuris Night (April 10th) this weekend where he managed to get behind the stage for a talk with N.E.R.D. and what they planned this summer with their new album, this is what Plaxxx found out that day. Besides N.E.R.D.’s new single Hot & Fun that they’ve been performing live lately, they also played another new song called ‘Party People, Quincy Jones/Michael Jackson sounding horns’ which is supposed to be a ‘Banger’ and according to Pharrell the new album is due End Of June. Here is the whole Review of the concert from Plaxxx.

“Wow is all i’ve go to say! So when I got there , i almost didnt get in. I was supposed to get a call from the Management but didnt until after i hustled my way in! So I wasnt on any guest list/vip whatever but this chick was cool and let me get in with the VIP, then I got a call from the Management about getting backstage passes so I was like fuck yeah. I saw the dudes right before they went on stage and I pointed at P and he gave me the thumbs up and I was like fuck yeah! After that N.E.R.D. took the stage, and let me tell you, the new song ‘Party People’ is a fucking BANGER. It’s NUTS. Loved it. My friend has a small vid of it and i’m gonna get it on here soon.

‘Hot & Fun’ was aiiiight. It might grow on me. So afterwords, I got backstage to meet them, it was so surreal. We took some pics and shit, and I asked P where those 27 tracks were and he was like don’t worry the new 15 on ‘Nothing’ are far better. He said it’s coming the End Of June. I also mentioned to him that i heard some Quincy sounding horns in party people and he was like yeah! Chad was cool but under the weather and Shae was cool too. Then after that they left quick. The rest of the night was dooope too! Common was amazing on stage, I briefly met him and shook his hand before he left. Bunch of craziness! But yeah that new song party people is nuts. It’s got some Quincy/old MJ elements to it.”

Kevin Lincoln interviewed Pharrell before the ‘Cameron Rocks at Duke University on April 1,’ performance, where Pharrell confirmed the album title to the new album titled ‘Nothing’ “because we scrapped all songs from last year” said Pharrell. He also revealed that they already finished 15 songs for the new album which is about “a conversation between us and women about society” The interesting part on this 10 min. interview is that Pharrell said that they started recording the new N.E.R.D. Album on January 15th so 3 days right after Rhea told people on her Twitter account that she’s still on Star Trak, so Rhea is probably the reason why N.E.R.D. started from scratch and with the new concept of the album.

N.E.R.D. are back and they’re not far away from releasing new album. MTV News spoke to the hip hop group at Levi’s Regent Street flagship store re-launch party where front man Pharrell Williams gave us an insight into their new material. Originally rumoured to be titled ‘Instant Gratification’, we can confirm it will actually be called Nothing as the band exclusively told us the title represents the guys’ decision to clear their minds and start from scratch. Pharrell explained: “We scrapped 27 records because they weren’t good enough, they sounded great – but what were they saying? So we went back in (to the studio) and just focused on feeling…” He added: “It’s almost like we did this whole entire album with our eyes closed, not because it was that easy but because it was that important to reconnect to what we feel and I would say this album is like scrapping everything and starting with nothing”.

It also turns out the rap collective’s female fans may find this project particularly amazing! Pharrell explained: “the music has been especially tuned in frequencies to speak to women… women will literally feel this, we are doing some other next level experimentation with this music…” “You know what’s so funny, It’s that not once do we say tit or ass or anything that you think could be automatically erogenous but I think that the right mentality and good and pure intention is the sexiest thing that I could ever give to a woman.” Pharrell continued: “Pure intentions and good energy about life and reminding her that she’s beautiful and even if you can’t afford that blouse or even if you can’t get those flats, please just remember that you’re a human being, and when you do get it, it’s ok…” “If you’re rich and you already have all those things, just take a step back and say I’m a human being and that makes me beautiful”. You can expect to hear a mastered version of new single, Hot & Fun in the next few weeks. We’ll be bringing you more from this exclusive interview soon.

To celebrate the re-launch of the Levi’s® Flagship Store last night saw a massive launch party at London’s Heaven. Billionaire Boys, N.E.R.D. headed the bill, with support coming from the evergreen Mick Jones and his ramshackled vagabonds, The Rotten Hill Gang and electro pioneers Fenech Soler. Set in the intimate, underground vaults of Charing Cross, Heaven provided the perfect venue for a star spangled guest list and a plethora of hyper-ventilating competition winners queuing all the way up to Trafalgar Sq. Music and Levi’s®. It’s a combination eternally entwined through out the decades. From Bob Dylan, to The Rolling Stones, Levi’s® have forever dealt in superstars of Rock And Roll. Tonight, Pharrell Williams and his band, No One Ever Really Dies, or N.E.R.D. to you and us, are the superstars charged with capping off a show that will go down as perhaps the best Levi’s® have hosted in our glittering history. Frontin the stage like an all-star American forward, Pharrell soaks up the electric atmosphere that borders on the absolute hysterical.

Launching into ‘Party People’ the tight, funk driven licks are soundcased by screaming besotted females while the boom shacking baselines of ‘Hot & Fun’ reverberate up the nearby Thames like a tidal Wave. Combining experimental and expansive Hip-Hop cuts with synths cut like glass and pulsating slow jams, ‘Hot In Hurr’, ‘Maybe’ and ‘Sooner Or Later’ sit pretty with a varied crowd of hardcore NERDS, Indie kids and Fashionisters, The liquid fluency of a band free from any instrumental constraints means crowd favourite ‘She Wants To’ flows delectably, while leading NERD lady Alesha Dixon does her best impression of herself in the crowd. Set closer and firm crowd favourite ‘Hot & Fun’ is belted out again, this time though, a topless Pharrell is surrounded on stage by a gaggle of girls and a thousand eyes , starring at a true superstar and a headline act that, in this form, will Never, Ever Really Die.

To it ‘No I W’ont Shoot You But I’ll Watch You Die’, check it out, thanks to YaheardFilm. Fourth Album A ‘New Era’ For N*E*R*D
