Kool G Rap recalls working with The Neptunes for his Rawkus debut “The Giacana Story.” In his 20-plus years in the Hip Hop industry, Kool G. Rap has crafted countless classics with legends like Marley Marl, DJ Premier and more. Now, in a recent interview with Unkut, the revered Juice Crew emcee recalls one studio session that ultimately failed to materialize into a single. Kool Giancana revealed that he was supposed to record a track produced by The Neptunes for his 2002 Rawkus album The Giacana Story. According to G. Rap, however, he and Pharrell were unable to get on the same page musically, as Skateboard P sought to sonically recreate the Juice Crew emcee’s hits like “Ill Street Blues.”
“Pharrell was trying to cater to hits that I did in the past, but I wanted him to come with some of the things he was doing during those times,” he said. “He was trying to come to my world, but I was trying to go to his world. I was trying to explain to him, ‘I’m trying to bring G. Rap to your world. Not convert to your world.’ But he was stuck on ‘Ill Street Blues.’ I guess that was one of his favorite G. Rap records, so I suppose he was trying to cater to that sound – but I was trying to get into the Neptunes sound of the times!” The Corona, Queens emcee is currently working on full-length projects with both Necro and The Alchemist.
