By Sinead Garvan. A$AP Ferg says working with Pharrell Williams is “dope” and he is “like a monk” in the studio. The pair have been working together on Ferg’s second album, which he says is nearly finished as he’s just putting the finishing touches on it. He admits he was in “awe” of Pharrell who spent a couple of days in the studio with him. “He is like a big brother figure for me, he gives me a lot of advice and drops jewels,” A$AP Ferg says.
“Just that experience of me being able to be in the studio with somebody I idolised for so long was great. “He changed my life with music because he showed me it was alright to be different, and make the music that you wanted to make.” In the studio next door were Haim, we think recording their second album too, whom he describes as his “sisters”. “We were running each other’s sessions and just bugging out,” he explains about Haim.
“That is usually how it is in the studio… you bump into someone you know, other artists that you don’t see for a long time, but you all love each other. “It will be like ‘come to my session’ and you go to their sessions, you all go out to eat, you might go to a party or an art show and then come back to the studio.”
You talked earlier about wanting to work with Pharrell, maybe on the next LP. Is that still on the cards?
I actually did a song with Pharrell – it never came out though. It was me, A$AP Nast and Rocky. It was called ‘A$AP Girl’. What was it about? It was about girls that are in love with A$AP. We call them Mob Wives. If you come to New Zealand we might have a mob wife for you. New Zealand, Australia we got them all over the place. Yeah, so we did a track, but it never came out. It probably might come out in the near future. On one of your records? I’m not sure – whoever needs it at the time. I would love to have it, but I want more of his advice then anything. I wanna work with him, you know I respect the person behind the music. Nobody doesn’t like Pharrell. He’s the biggest, oldest artist, and I’m the biggest, youngest artist. [Laughs.]. Thanks to matty.
By Roman Cooper. A$AP Ferg released his debut album, Trap Lord, this year. In a recent interview with Montreality, Ferg spoke about his upcoming and current efforts. “The L.O.R.D. album, most definitely looking forward to doing that,” said Ferg of A$AP Mob’s oft-delayed album. “We’re working on it now. I got Trap Lord in stores now… ‘Shabba Ranks‘ remix is on iTunes, as well as ‘Work‘ remix.”
Ferg was asked about Pharrell, who has collaborated with A$AP Rocky on the “Pretty Flacko Remix.” “Pharrell, he’s like the godfather,” said Ferg. “The gem he gave me was he told me, ‘Keep goin’,’ and he said, ‘I got the next album; don’t leave me out.’ That’s what he told me. I’m looking forward to him, and I marked his words on that one.”
