From One Hand To Another is a camp that inspires and encourages students to dream big by teaching them and exposing them to many different career paths. Chances are you never went to a summer camp like this. Thanks to popular singer Pharrell Williams and his mother, Dr. Carolyn Williams, students in Virginia Beach are spending their summers keeping their minds engaged and their creativity flowing at “From One Hand To Another” on the Hampton University campus at Virginia Beach Town Center.

“Education encompasses many, many components and this is just another educational opportunity for kids,” said Dr. Carolyn Williams. “We like to keep it fun.” They sure do. “From One Hand To Another” teaches kids things like physics, economics and algebra, but they also expose kids to unique opportunities like video shoots. When 13NewsNow visited, students were busy shooting two videos that will serve as Public Service Announcements, PSA’s.

“What we are accomplishing is the opportunity for kids to use media technology, but also to highlight an issue we think kids need to know about — the dangers of texting while driving,” Dr. Williams said. “The students feel that is a very hot topic and is very pertinent and is one that a lot of people really need to take to heart because there are too many tragedies just not waiting patiently to wait to get home.”

Two photographers, a director and assistant director were working with the students to make sure the scenes turned out just right. Students wrote the 1-minute PSA, acted in it, and will help edit it. Same thing for another PSA about encouraging children to get excited about eating more fruits and vegetables. In that PSA, students also produced their own music. It sounds fun, but students are learning it’s a lot of hard work. The key word is learning.

“Education encompasses many, many components and this is just another educational opportunity for kids,” said Dr. Williams. “They have really learned what happens in a real shoot, in a real video set. They’re learning the real deal when it comes to production.” Expand learning opportunities and encouraging students to use their imaginations to better equip them for the future — that’s how Pharrell Williams and his mother, Dr. Carolyn Williams, make their mark with “From One Hand To Another“. “The mission statement — change the world one kid at a time by giving them the tools and resources to meet their unique potential,” Dr. Williams said.
