Mariah Carey says working with Pharrell Williams was “a real collaborative moment”. The 50-year-old songstress teamed up with Pharrell for her 10th album, ‘The Emancipation Of Mimi‘, which celebrates its 15th Anniversary this month, and Mariah admitted she broke her own rules of doing her vocals alone to work closely with Pharrell on the track ‘Say Something‘. She explained to Billboard:
“Those writing sessions were great. Pharrell is just such a vibrant person and artist, so I really enjoyed making that record with him and collaborating with Snoop [Dogg] again on that song. It wasn’t my usual session, because I did the vocals there with [Pharrell] in the studio. Usually I go in by myself and just do whatever I’m feeling, but it was a real collaborative moment.
“[The label] wanted to actually go with ‘Say Somethin‘ as the lead single. [They] were like, ‘I love it, I love it. It’s so different for you. You should go with it.’ I felt like it was a really strong album cut, but I didn’t see it as the first single for me, because I thought it was too different. I think we really made the right choice artistically to work [with Pharrell]. It was such a perfect time in my life and my career for that.”
And 15 years later, Mariah is still hugely proud of the album. She said: “It really was a moment and it did feel special. When I think about all the different songs on [the album] and the different collaborators, the timing was just right. It was the first time I collaborated with The Neptunes [Pharrell and his producing partner Chad Hugo], and it was the first time I worked with [the late James] ‘Big Jim’ Wright as a producer with ‘Circles’ and with ‘Fly Like a Bird’.”
JD, Leah Labelle & Pharrell
By Kelly-Mae Mahoney. Celebrations were underway last night as Jermaine Dupri and Pharrell Williams toasted it up with Mariah Carey and L.A. Reid to welcome their new signing Leah Labelle. The group hit up a classy New York City restaurant named Catch last night, hosting a luxurious welcoming party for their newest joint musical protegee Leah Labelle. The Seattle singer, who was a former contestant on season three of American Idol in 2004, recently released her first music video for the Pharrell Williams-produced track penned, ‘Sexify.’

Leah dined with her new bosses toasting over champagne and dining on rice cakes and herb roasted branzino. The group then partied it up with R&B veteran Mariah Carey and Terrence J while music mogul L.A. Reid also arrived to show some support. The 26-year-old singer later tweeted to her 21,000 fans: “An EPIC moment at my dinner tonight, I can’t even express my joy.” Thanks to BlueSky2308.
Vibe Magazine issued a statement today in response to Robin Thicke’s controversial interview last week, an interview in which the singer says he was denied the cover because he was white. In response to Thicke’s claim, the magazine says: “We have a great deal of respect for Robin Thicke and his music, and we remain flattered by his desire to be on a VIBE Cover. A VIBE cover is a huge milestone in any artist’s career—recent cover stars include Young Jeezy, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, Usher, Senator Barack Obama, Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, and Robert De Niro, to say nothing of our 15-year history.
We wish Thicke the best, and we’re glad he discusses his thoughts on race and R&B in the new October 2008 issue of VIBE.” Regardless of transpired with Vibe, Thicke says “I respect that [their decision] because I live in a house with a black woman. I won’t use the word racism. I will say it’s a tough — but rewarding — fight. I look at Mary J. Blige, somebody who has had only a few pop hits and yet has changed culture, generated new sounds and inspired leagues of artists. She’s now a worldwide phenomenon. And it’s because of what she stood for; she never gave up.”
On top of the hint that was placed by her group mate Kelly Rowland about next year’s possible reunion of Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé has been working on her upcoming third solo effort. She is reportedly working with rapper Kanye West in the album, which is allegedly scheduled to drop with title “Virtuoso Intellect“. Beyoncé has also reportedly included producers Rodney Jerkins, The Neptunes, and The-Dream in a list of her possible collaborators for the album.
Furthermore, her upcoming album is believed to include her song entitled “Beautiful Nightmare” as one of the U.S. Bonus Tracks. The single is supposedly scheduled for release on iTunes on September 12 but has been leaked months before. Beyoncé’s next album is reportedly scheduled for an international full release on November 11 while the domestic edition is set to drop a week later on November 18. Elsewhere, Beyoncé has another project of recording an anthem called “Just Stand Up“. She is going to team up with a dozen of the world’s most accomplished female recording artists, such as Rihanna and Mariah Carey to support a cancer campaign. The single will be available for digital download on September 2.
